Inspired by the in-between, Dana Bunker draws from photographs of loved ones. The figures she depicts are in the state of becoming as they wildly writhe against their environment. It is unclear whether they are growing or expanding beyond themselves, or if they are simply breaking down and dissolving into what surrounds them. Her work is often a study of the way she feels about her place in the world, as the slow process of pen on paper allows her to step back and consider the self-split she herself faces as she balances her life as an artist the responsibilities of day to day living.
Growing up amongst the vast redwood trees, Dana Bunker spent much of her early years drawing and painting amongst the mountainous landscape in Northern California. You could say her work, with its illustrative style, is largely influenced by being a girl once stuck in the wilderness.
Having moved to New York City in 2004, Bunker earned a BFA from Pratt Institute and now resides in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
